A Provider's Introduction to Substance Abuse Treatment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgenter Individuals

Event Type: Educational Event
What: LGBT clients face a number of significant dilemmas: If they come out, they face possible rejection and alienation. If they don’t come out, they are labeled as untruthful. If they point out their differences from heterosexual clients, they are asking for special privileges or jeopardizing other clients’ recovery, but if they accept generic treatment, their own recovery is jeopardized. Finally, they are likely to encounter some staff and other clients who will impose their own religious beliefs on them. LGBT people deserve equal access to treatment, which doesn’t mean equal treatment. This curriculum was developed to provide practitioners and administrators knowledge about the interaction between LGBT issues and substance use disorders. The curriculum offers skill-building knowledge enhancing practical abilities to offer sensitive, affirmative, culturally relevant, and effective treatment to LGBT individuals in substance use disorders treatment.
